The Mandela effect
The Mandela effect is when lots of people vividly remember the same thing—that never happened. It's named for the many who 'remember' Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s (he was released in 1990 and died in 2013). It's a fascinating quirk of memory—not, despite the internet's hopes, proof of parallel universes.
😄 Fun to notice, mundane to explain: human memory is reconstructive, not a recording. We rebuild memories each time we recall them, and we fill gaps with plausible guesses — often the same guesses as everyone else.

Actually: He never has. You may be blending him with Mr. Peanut. Rich-cartoon-man = monocle feels right, so we invent it.

Why it happens (the boring, real answer)
- Reconstructive memory: we don't replay memories, we rebuild them — and quietly patch holes with what should be true;
- Schema and pattern-filling: a rich cartoon businessman 'should' have a monocle; a familiar spelling pattern feels correct — so our brains supply it;
- Social reinforcement: we share and confirm each other's false memories, and repetition breeds confidence (the internet supercharges this);
- Confabulation: the brain confidently generates plausible details it never actually witnessed.
The parallel-universe question
It's a fun idea, and we won't spoil anyone's cosmic wonder—but the phenomenon is fully explained by ordinary, well-studied memory science. No timeline-hopping required. Interestingly, the reconstructive, gap-filling, confident-but-wrong nature of human memory is a lot like what AI language models do — both are prediction engines that sometimes predict wrong.
